I saw the new film Elles starring Juliette Binoche directed by Malgoska Szumowska, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this week and focuses on a journalist (who could be anyone we know really) working on a story about young prostitutes. It’s a well done film, juxtaposing the ways we deal with sexuality and the double standard imposed on women, the classic virgin versus whore mentality that is constantly at play not only in every day interactions but in the pages of fashion magazines, advertising, films, and pop culture in general. So many layers here to unfold, a film worth seeing. It opened today in select theaters in the US and at NuArt in LA.
