There is a sexy sadness to the new French film Yves Saint Laurent, directed by Jalil Lespert and starring Pierre Niney and Guillaume Gallienne, which opens at Film Forum on June 25th From Weinstein Company. It’s an emotional beautiful film told with just the right amount of details and layers if not an overstatement of innocence. It’s not easy to see a visionary legend as flawed. The World Cup matches start tomorrow with Brazil & Croatia, which provides everyone not only the opportunity to cheer on hot men in shorts but do some day drinking on week days (sometimes early in the morning with a bagel). I dug into some new Lancome products this weekend and discovered the best mascara I have ever tried: Lancome’s Oscillation Powermascara. It’s those insanely thin delicate bristles on the brush; the second they touched my lashes I could feel them elongating and beautifying. Seriously.
I went to a screening of Begin Again this week, the new film from Once writer and director John Carney, starring Kiera Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. If you saw Once and fell in love with everything about it this one is for you. If you didn’t, it will be a great introduction to what John Carney does with his special weave of music and film. I love the painful joy his films emit, and the way he makes me laugh and cry at the same time. Life is nothing without second chances and the hope that creativity inspires. Aside from a fantastic cast, which also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Catherine Keener (wish there was more of her on screen), Adam Levine, Yasiin Bey and Cee Lo Green, the pacing of the film is lyrical and inspirational. The music is everything it promises and the ending is perfect. The film opens June 27th from Weinstein Company, you can watch the trailer below. Continue reading
