Mykita, Fashion Week and Other Happenings in JAPAN

This week Mykita, the eight year old Berlin born and based line of architecturally constructed eyewear will open their sixth freestanding boutique in the world during Japan’s Fashion Week which starts today through Friday. They were just in LA last week showing their latest and greatest at Soho House in West Hollywood. I became a little obsessed with the Mykita line as I listened to one of the founders Moritz Krueger describe the process and thought behind each component of the collection. Each pair of glasses and sunglasses is hand-made and constructed with thought and care. It’s a seemingly neglected craft that most companies forget because sunglasses have become the gateway to licensing for a myriad of brands and there seems to be little artistry left for those accessories. Mykita keeps the tradition of art, design and detailed construction alive and well. They have also recently collaborated with a number of designers including Alexandre Herchcovitch for the last two seasons. I also love the beautiful lookbook shot by Mark Borthwick.
