The Punks & The Socialites, A Reunion

I’ve always had a theory that the fashion world (maybe the world in general) is made up of two camps: the punks/misfits and the cheerleaders/socialites. The punks don’t always dress like they did in the 70s but they lead with risk taking ideas while socialites follow and adapt those ideas to the mainstream. The socialites always look like what you would expect (full disclosure, I dress more like a socialite these days than a punk and love every clean cut minute of it) but this isn’t about what’s on the outside. Steve Jobs was a punk and he wore lumpy sweaters and loafers. As we get older the two teams start to merge and cross pollinate, sometimes successfully (Liz Hurley, punk turned socialite) and other times not (January Jones, a cheerleader who wants to be punk but isn’t on the inside hence all those funky dress choices that never look quite right). But we do need both to function. Tonight’s high school reunion is making me think about all this again. Continue reading

Evening Look, High School Reunion

My high school reunion is this Saturday (more on that later, I’ve been looking at old photos seeing if there is a good one to post) and obviously I am thinking about my outfit. I love this Calypso sequin tank top with Givenchy jeans, a Diane Von Furstenberg pony hair clutch and Brian Atwood booties.

Magda Berliner Trunk Show

One of LA’s best fashionable exports, Magda Berliner, is having a trunk show in Miami during Art Basel. If you’re going check out the always fabulous threads this amazing lady has been creating for years now. Her lace pieces are beyond, they’re what I fell in love with when I first saw her work ages ago and luckily that is what she is bringing to Miami. Magda and I met in Paris during fashion week ten years ago while I was working for Russian Vogue. We spent many years after bumping into each other at fashion events all around the world until I finally landed on the West Coast and since then she’s become a cherished friend and partner in fashion all about town in LA and NYC.

Gone To Shoot The Turkey (Just Kidding…)

I tried to find an image of a turkey that didn’t scare me to death and it was impossible. Go ahead, google the word ‘turkey’ and see what pops up, it’s not pretty. The image above of Norman Rockwell’s fantasy Thanksgiving Dinner is much more appealing. Full disclosure, that is not what our Thanksgiving dinners look like though they came close about twenty years ago when my step father’s mom was still alive and gathered everyone at her house and actually made it look like the painting. Since she passed away years ago we’ve all scattered at Thanksgiving. Anyway, I digress. This was supposed to be a simple Happy Turkey Day post. We will be eating our dinner out this year but if we were eating at home I would be making my mashed potatoes (recipe below), fattening and not for the diet obsessed but SO good and worth the calories, I promise. Fred Falke, Aurora

Fred Falke – Aurora (Original Mix) by Olivier Londres

I needed a little music on this gloomy East Coast Tuesday. Love this track from German born, French based musician and producer Fred Falke‘s debut LP Part IV, being released next month. Fred’s also remixed tracks for a slew of other artists including Goldfrapp, Röyksopp and Kelis.

Lady Gaga, Barney’s Workshop

Ok, I am just going to speak heresy and admit I am not that fascinated by the actual stuff for sale at the workshop but I do love her music (I think Bad Romance is one of the best songs & videos of all time) and her ethos, plus I adore Barney’s. But mostly I am taken with the fact that 25% of all sales from the Lady Gaga Barney’s workshop that she made an appearance for last night in NYC will go towards her anti-bullying effort, the Born This Way Foundation. Now that is very cool. Kudos. Continue reading

Raquel Allegra Launches E Commerce

One of my favorite LA-based designers Raquel Allegra is launching her E-commerce shop. I love Raquel’s designs, got obsessed with them when she first launched in 2008 and was always shooting her stuff for WWD. If you ‘like’ her on Facebook between now and December 15th you will be entered to win one of her limited edition Long sleeve Cocoon Tees in Taupe. Check out more of her designs here… Continue reading

Casual Look, Home for the Holidays

Is there anything more fun than being home for the holidays and hanging with the family? Go a little retro, it’s very appropriate this time of year… I love this Mulberry bird print blouse with a leather bomber jacket, Rag & Bone jeans, and sweet Christian Louboutin heels. My high school reunion is this Saturday and I haven’t decided what to wear yet but I might post a retro photo of me from way back when as the day gets closer. Check back later this week to see if I get the nerve…

Vivian Maier, Street Photographer

Vivian Maier belongs in the same camp as Robert Frank, Helen Levitt, Dorothea Lange and Henri Cartier Bresson, the only difference is that she worked as a nanny by day and a photographer only when time allowed, by day or by night, days off and vacations, but with no apparent intentions other than to capture her subjects for her own lyrical haunting visual diary. She was born in NYC, raised in Paris and returned to her birth city in the 50’s. She died at Continue reading

Bally Bags To Die For…

Dying over this Bally bag from Spring 2012. Love this color so much! I had an old Fendi bag from ten years ago in a similar color (it was when the bag designer who eventually went to Bottega to do accessories was working at Fendi and she did the most insane bags!) Anyway, I digress. I am in love with this bag, can’t decide which one I like better, this one or the one below… Continue reading
