Dolce Gabbana Spring Summer 2011

I don’t know how they do it but every season Dolce Gabbana makes lace and flower prints look fresh and new again. Sexy Italian film worthy looks, love everything on the runway.

One of my all time favorite Dolce Gabbana looks from Fall Winter 2003, Below

DSquared2 Spring Summer 2011

Love the slouchy sexy mod Ska looks from DSquared2. I always love their gowns too and am surprised more stylists in LA don’t utilize them for their clients for Red Carpet events. The boys add the perfect touch of masculin feminin to their collections that I am obsessed with.

Polly Mellen

I just read the fantastic article on Polly Mellen that Nicolas Ghesquiere did in this months Interview magazine. It reminded me how much I learned from Ms. Mellen while assisting her during the last year that she worked at Allure Magazine. I always recall when she interviewed me for the position, she was leafing through my stylist portfolio and stopped to look at me and say, “Hellin, I don’t know if you know who I am but I have quite a reputation.” I looked at her smiling, not entirely knowing the scope of her history as I had recently graduated film school, not fashion school and replied, “Polly, I’ve heard all the stories, I’m not afraid of you.” She almost burst out laughing but held it in a tight lipped smirk and hired me that day. While I had only heard minimal stories about Polly I found her to be incredibly Continue reading

Versace Spring Summer 2011

I can’t deny I have a soft spot for Versace. Every season there are always a few dresses that I think are pretty hot and it was one of the first shows I went to as a young editor in Milan so have fond memories of being backstage as well as the dinners afterwards at Via Gesu. Not a lot of Red Carpet ready looks in this collection but there is still Couture in January so I imagine we will see them then.

Bottega Veneta Spring Summer 2011

I always love the simple sophisticated clothes from Bottega Veneta. Grown up dresses, suits and separates with just enough edge and fashion forward thinking to wear on both sides of the tracks.

Beautiful Walls

I may have spent too many years in the small dark theater of Preston at Bard being lectured by Adolfas Mekas on the beauty of painted film but nonetheless he did a great job of instilling a deep appreciation in me for the seemingly simple but utmost beautiful. Hence, my obsession with walls, especially graffiti and well tagged walls. The one above is from the corner of Houston and Bowery, the one below is from the bathroom at one of my favorite sushi places in the East Village, Takahachi on Avenue A. I love the repetition of color and lines in the one above.

ELLE Magazine’s October Cover & 25th Anniversary Issue

For all the negativity going around this is actually a pretty amazing cultural moment. From Glee to the cover of ELLE with Gabourey Sidibe there has never been a time in our pop culture history when beauty and talent were acknowledged and celebrated in every form, shape, size, color and breed. I love this cover, it’s beautiful in countless ways. Happy Birthday ELLE! Also LOVE the Quarterbacks feature, the whole issue looks amazing but what else is new.

Alberta Ferretti Spring Summer 2011

Obsessed. Every look, every dress, every sweater, every piece of printed chiffon and lace. I want it all. This is the girl I want to be on any given Summer night, I don’t care where I am as long as I can hug my knees as I sit in one of those dresses and look equal parts demure and seductive while I do it. Alberta Ferretti never fails to capture the dreamy willowy sexy nature of being a girl. Obsessed.

MastBooks on Avenue A

Apparently somewhere, namely Avenue A, people still read and demand a proper real bookstore. Mastbooks opened up only a couple of months ago in the same spot as that cool little record store used to be on Avenue A between 4th and 5th Street. New York still has the best bookstrores in America and I was happy to find this little cubby hole with a very eclectic and focused selection of anything you may need. And if you don’t find it here well, there is always Strand a few blocks away. www.mastbooks.com
