Juan Wauters, Household, Las Rosas

photo-19

We went to see some really great music last night at Baby’s All Right, a new spot for food, music and booze in Brooklyn. Las Rosas opened and killed it with their Arctic Monkeys style guitar riffs and layers. I loved them almost as much as Brooklyn based trio Household, whose sound reminded me of old school Sleater Kinney and Le Tigre. I got hooked on Talya Cooper, their lead singer and guitarist along side Isabel Freeman on bass and Nick Millhiser on drums. The night was actually a record release party for Juan Wauters of The Beets, and his solo debut N.A.P. North American Poetry, which just came out via Captured Tracks on February 4th. He’s got an electric folksy vibe which Continue reading

Grey Matter

grey sweater cable knit dipped hem

I’ve been on a kick with grey lately. It’s such a cool color and easy to accentuate with pinks and yellows and even shades of brown. Above, a cable knit dipped hem sweater, below Rag & Bone striped shirt, Old Navy fit and flare jersey dress, seam funnel coat, Kaliko pleated dress, Seven for Mankind skinny jeans, Megara high neck jumpsuit, Joseph cotton pant with leather detail (fancy sweats, LOVE these), McQ Mcqueen flannel and leather pleated trousers, steel grey plait swimsuit, River Island plaid shirt, Limited satchel, Tom Ford leather bag, Hermes heritage auctions Birkin bag, Saint Laurent leather bag, and a 3.1 Philip Lim mint ‘Pashli’ satchel (I always wonder if this is him saying “let’s go” in Russian, that’s what “pashli” means in any case. 400 oz Skull Tablet Stand

photo-17

A good friend of mine from Detroit came to visit this past week and brought me this awesome 400 OZ skull tablet stand as a house warming gift. The stand, which can hold an iPad, an iPhone or other tablets was designed by Doug Schwartz, the owner of Complex, a cool little specialized boutique in Michigan. The skulls are a gorgeous coffee stand decoration piece as well and were featured at Art Basel this past December. Sweet little Valentine’s gift too. Continue reading

Zac Posen, Reem Acra, Donna Karan

zac 25

One of the things I have learned in LA (besides the ability to drive while doing a thousand other things) is an undying love for gowns, not prom dresses, which is what you end up seeing a lot of on most LA red carpets save for some of the big ones. Zac Posen, above, is one of my favorites, Reem Acra always have great options as well and aside from the gowns, I love when Donna Karan goes hard and sexy, which she did tonight. Continue reading

Tess Giberson, Fall 2014

tess 28tess 27tess 18

Tess Giberson has a way of melding her artistic experimental side with knowing what a certain kind of girl wants to wear and this season that girl was in high gear, with perfect layers, classic chunky knits and my favorite long billowy shirts over slim trousers. Continue reading

Empire Diner

photo-14

Friday evening we went for dinner at the Empire Diner space on 10th Avenue and 22nd street, which just reopened last week for dinner only (lunch service is coming in a few more weeks). This used to be one of my favorite places in the city, with their blue cheese lentil burger that was so addictive. The menu is different this time around as is the chef (Amanda Freitag) but that turned out to be a great thing once I let go of my disappointment that the new menu had no lentil burger in sight. Instead the menu is peppered with fantastic and interesting twists to old favorites like the jalopeno infused martini and the patty melt, which is like a grilled cheese with a burger. Their brussell sprouts have a tangy vinegar twist, which also acts as a great dipping sauce for the melt. We even had dessert, which involved a salted caramel sauce and donuts. Continue reading
