Shirin Neshat in Detroit

I saw Iranian American (and NY-based) artist Shirin Neshat‘s video installation Turbulent in St.Petersburg, Russia of all places, in 2000 I think it was, maybe 2001? It blew my mind (you can watch it below). It’s two screens facing each other in a large room, one room with a male singer and a male choir behind him, the other with a sole woman singing (and her singing is beyond unreal). It’s an amazing piece on gender roles and power. The Detroit Institute of Art is presenting a mid-career retrospective of her work from April 7th through July 7th. A friend of mine who lives in Detroit and has been trying to get me to come visit for years might just see me on his door step this summer. Continue reading →

Veronica Beard

Last week was filled with some cool meetings and fashion discoveries including Veronica Beard, one of whom was in LA with their fall 2013 collection. There are two ladies named Veronica Beard (it’s a cool story, trust me) two sisters-in-law that married the Beard brothers years ago and then three years ago started the clothing line that has become a staple for girls who appreciate the dickie mixed with blazer look (insert me raising my hand here…) I am completely obsessed with this knit hoodie blazer from spring 2013 and dying over the “gypsy gown” below. Calvin Rucker

Calvin Rucker may sound like a cool guy but it’s actually an even cooler gal who plays hooky on a Tuesday afternoon to drive out to Malibu just because the sun is shining, with the top down, wind blowing, listening to Coldplay and IconaPop and gets back to the office in time to throw her heels and blazer back on to finish her deadline. The ladies who created that girl are Joie Rucker and Caroline Calvin, who have their own amazing long history in the fashion biz. RIP Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe passed away today at age 82. He was an incredible writer that wrote one of the world’s favorite books, Things Fall Apart, which was published in 1958 and is set in his homeland of Nigeria. Rid of Me

I loved Rid Of Me written and directed by James Westby so much. The film, which stars Katie O’Grady, did great on the festival circuit the last couple of years, with screenings at Toronto and Tribeca. I saw it on Netflix last weekend (I’m newly obsessed with Netflix after subscribing for House of Cards) and fell head over heels in love with everything about it. So brilliantly dark, funny, beautiful and reminiscent of so much. I miss true smart indie films like this, they are rare these days.

Catherine Malandrino for Kohl’s

I love a good fashion sketch. Catherine Malandrino is doing an 80-piece collection for Kohl’s Design Nation collaboration. The line rolls out to stores in September and October, according to WWD, “with prices ranging from $36 to $130, the line will be sold in 1,100 Kohl’s stores as well as [online].”

Coachella Style, Tips & Mad Anticipation

Let’s be honest, Coachella is as much about the music as it is about fashion and there is nothing more important about that weekend then what you put on your feet. Fiorentini & Baker have been making some of the best boots this side of the desert (or really THAT side of the ocean since they come from London originally) for more years than some of us care to remember. Second to what’s on your feet is sunscreen and dresses! I live in dresses year round and especially at Coachella. I love a dress with the perfectly beat up pair of brown leather boots.
