Kevyn Aucoin Lip Gloss

Lip gloss is a tricky thing. It seems simple enough but a lot of glosses are sticky, smelly and unbearable. So when I find a good one I get excited. For years I used Kiehl’s Cherry lip balm which was the bomb. Then they discontinued the color in my favorite small plastic containers. Lately I have been hooked on The Rodial glam balm and now I am obsessed with the Kevyn Aucoin Elegant Lip GLoss. The color looks a bit intense but actually goes on clear with just the right amount of shine.

Saint Laurent Fall 2013

I see Hedi Slimane’s point, and I like it, but that’s because it is exactly how I dressed in high school twenty years ago. Right down to the fishnets, plaid coats and buckle boots. I’m not sure how well it will go over with Paris YSL die hards though. I imagine there will be a lot of talk about how California has “corrupted” YSL. Whatever. I also get the whole nostalgia thing, I’ve been going through an all black phase paired with sweaters again recently too. Something happens in your 30’s, as you near 40 (or get there and pass it…) and suddenly you want to go back, even for a moment. The easiest way to do it is with some black leather boots and plaid shirts. What he showed with this new Saint Laurent collection may not be a new story but it’s not without some rocker chic merit, though I’m not sure who will want to pay YSL prices for St. Mark’s Place threads (which, Anna Sui already does at designer prices). Just saying… Punk is beyond officially dead. Continue reading

SOLA, Sisters of LA

So excited by everything Sara Stein, Karen Alweil and Barbara Bestor are doing with their new gifts and memorabilia company, Sisters of LA (*SOLA, I love the name). If you’ve spent any time in the world of fashion in NY or LA in the past twenty years, you know Sara as an uber PR maven who was responsible for a roster of amazing brands, events and launches over the years on both coasts. Last year she partnered with her two friends (Barbara is an incredible architect and is doing all the design along with Karen who is a product specialist) on a line of cool gifts that are sold in a long list of Continue reading

Cycle For Survival 2013

Yesterday morning I took part in Cycle For Survival, the six year old campaign which raises money for rare cancer research. One of my best friends, Marcy Medina who I worked with at WWD organised a group of rad ladies most of whom were or still are editors at WWD, to be on the WWD LA team. Until Marcy asked me to participate I hadn’t quite realised how much and how often cancer has touched my life and my family. It seems silly to say it but it’s true. My dad died of cancer twelve years ago, my mom survived lung cancer five years ago and late last year one of my close friends Continue reading

Lanvin Fall 2013

Beautiful, Lanvin fall 2013. My one hesitation in posting some of the looks with fur is that they be mistaken for approval. I have been anti fur (or *Pro Faux as I like to call it) since high school and although I think fur looks amazing I don’t think it needs to be real. One day I dream that designers will utilize faux the way they do real and we can relax and enjoy how fabulous it looks over a dress. Continue reading
