September 11th

That day changed everything, forever. Being here and watching NYC go through September 11th was like watching your father get beat up in front of you. Everything I thought I knew changed. NYC was the safest, strongest city in the world to me and it was painful to have that shattered. And that was just a small side effect of the bigger picture and how the world changed. For that I will never ever forgive the people responsible. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I woke up, checked my emails. Didn’t turn on the Continue reading

Tess Giberson Spring Summer 2012

I loved Tess Giberson‘s show! Simple, chic and sexy in an abstract way. Tess and I worked at Calvin Klein together years ago, 1996 to be exact. I am so impressed and proud every time I see one of her collections. Samira Nasr, who styled the show and did a beautiful job was also a colleague of mine while I worked at Allure assisting Polly Mellen from 1999 to 2000. I love that we all “grew up” together in this bussiness. So many talented ladies! Congrats Tess and Samira!

Imitation of Christ, Spring Summer 2012

I’ve been absent from writing because I spent the last few days working day and night (literally) styling the Imitation of Christ show with designer Tara Subkoff who just re-launched her eponymous brand after a brief hiatus. It was an amazing experience and every time I work behind the scenes of a show I am reminded of just how much work goes into creating the brief fifteen minutes that everyone else watches. It’s phenomenal. I love working with other artists and Tara is definitely an artist. She is a designer, an actress, a filmmaker and a performance art mastermind. I think she and I fell off the same creative boat, I loved collaborating with her and we had a great synergy while working on the show. Our spirits are both mired in Paris and New York of the Twenties, which is evident in this collection to say the least. And it was really fun to see my friend Miles Fisher who I met in LA a few years ago and was thrilled to see walk through the door of our studio; he was the groom to Lydia Hearst‘s bride. Miles is an amazing actor and was responsible for a slew of Tom Cruise (who he looks like) videos that went viral a few years ago. He is also in a new film called “Final Destination”. It’s been a great week, and while I may be completely exhausted it doesn’t feel right to complain because really, it all kind of rocks. Thanks for a great week to Tara and all the amazing hard working guys and gals at Showroom Seven. More pics from the show below… Continue reading

A Moment of Silence… in Nevada

When I was 19 I went to live and work with the American Indian Movement on Western Shoshone territory just outside of Elko Nevada. One of my favorite days in life is the first time I had to bathe there. There was no running water while we were living in trailers on the Dann sisters’ territory. Instead of hot showers we rode horseback into the hills and bathed in the hot springs that poured out of the mountains into the wooden tubs the sisters had installed on top of the hill. It was a twenty minute ride on horseback and five below zero in January so you could only let your wet head peek out of the water filled tub for a few seconds before your entire head would literally freeze. For some reason I think about that day a lot while working during fashion week. The infamous hot springs tub above, circa 1992. Enjoy the silence…

Fashion Week Look Day 3

I love the way fur looks. Just don’t love the idea of skinning animals for it so am thrilled when someone produces beautiful faux fur. This is a fun fashion week look, a McQ by McQueen dress, Dior booties, a sweet neutral Miu Miu bag that I love and a gorgeous faux fur from Anna Sui.

The Opposite of Me

So I found this blog that is the exact opposite of my life and I love it for the same reasons I love my life. Does that make sense? It’s making me nostaligic for the beginning, when we were making the choices that got us to… here. All good choices, just different. The blog, aptly titled “NYC Taught Me” is written by a 29 year old mom who moved to the city a year ago with her 3 kids and husband who she married at 21. Adorable story, even more adorable kids (and husband) and here’s the kicker, she wants to work in publishing and the blog, aside from documenting her adventures in city dwelling and discovering all the ways the apple slices, is also a diary of Continue reading

Fashion Week Inspiration, Men’s Board

John Crocco, Perry Ellis

One of my favorite things that WWD does is their Fashion Week inspiration features. It’s a ritual that repeats every season for men’s and women’s for every city including NY, London, Milan, Paris and even LA at times. Below are my favorites from the men’s inspiration boards. Continue reading

Fashion Week Look Day 2

I love painting with prints! Mixing and matching prints and patterns is not going anywhere (thank god!) I love this M Missoni dress, with the cutout Miu Miu booties and a leopard print envelope clutch from Jimmy Choo. It really comes down to colors and just the right combination of patterns and shapes to make a good print pairing work.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

“Martha Marcy May Marlene” starring Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes is finally opening in October. I saw it at Sundance in January and absolutely loved it (except the title…) It’s haunting and disturbing on so many levels and absolutely brilliant. Elizabeth Olsen is phenomenal in it. She blew me away. The whole cast is astounding and this is a must see film. Beyond. Watch the trailer below… Continue reading
