The Road To Magic

The first time I went to Magic/Project in Vegas was in 2008 while working for WWD. Needless to say Magic was unimpressive, chaotic and filled with, honestly, awful stuff. Project and Pool were the winners that year, where I found some of my favorite young designers. So when I got invited to attend again this year I went hoping for the best and thankfully wasn’t disappointed. Magic has had a complete much needed makeover and Project and Pool are still doing their thing well. The best part though was driving up from LA which is super easy and full of fun stops like Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner in Barstow (which we discovered last summer on our way to Vegas with friends) and The Mad Greek diner which in my opinion was missing some serious eggplant dishes and Continue reading

Social Goodies

I love when people combine doing good with shopping. Almost as good as combining a night of food, film and fashion. All of the above are things I could spend my life doing. Oh, wait, that is my life! Sweet. So it’s good to give back some of the blessings we get, which is what Social Goodies founder Carie Salter decided to do. After spending years working in the financial sector and taking a few years off to have a gorgeous son Carie decided she needed to get back in the swing of things by starting this daily deals website that donates its profits to charity. They’ve already donated $24,000 in the short few months since they launched. Continue reading

The Eye Has To Travel

Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s book Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel is coming out October 1st. Lisa married one of Vreeland’s grandsons and compiled this book along with a documentary film about her life. I bought a first edition copy of Diana Vreeland‘s own infamous book, Allure, years ago while still at Bard at the Rhinebeck Library book sale for $20. Original copies sell for $500 now but I have no plans to part with mine. I wish I was around when she was, what a different time in fashion and publishing. I love the story of how she got her job as Fashion Editor with Carmel Snow.

Street Art in LA

As anyone in LA will tell you driving gets boring, hence all those texting accidents. So instead of updating Facebook or Twitter at red lights I’ve gotten in the habit of looking to my right and trying to find rad street art, which as it turns out is not hard to do. Above, the latest find in Los Feliz…

Tierney Gearon For Russian Vogue

I found this old (let’s call it vintage!) Tierney Gearon shoot I styled for Russian Vogue in December of 1999 (it ran in the April 2000 issue). There are so many stories going on here it’s hard to remember them all but it was a pretty amazing day. It took a lot of convincing for me to get the London office of Russian Vogue to give the green light for a shoot with Tierney at the time but we made it happen and had a very cool team, I loved working with her and Camellia Clouse. I remember being excited to get that emerald green Versace dress walking out of Lucy’s on Avenue A because I thought it was kind of ironic and subversive to get Versace at a dive bar across from Tompkins Square Park. I used to shoot at Lucy’s all the time and bless Lucy’s heart (yes, there is a real Lucy) she never wanted a big location fee, just always asked for copies of the magazine which I would deliver. The rest of the shoot (with the Versace dress) is below, including a shot with me in the background at Cafe Gitane which is where we picked up Franck and Dorota along the way… Continue reading

Alexandre Birman Boots For Fall

Dying over these Alexandre Birman boots. This color just never gets old and it will last season after season, this is the kind of purchase you can totally justify because these boots will last you forever and will look good with just about anything depending on how you style them. Obsessed beyond words. Wear them with a cute dress like the Miu Miu one below or mid-calf or maxi skirts or jeans and T shirts… Really, they will make anything look better and hotter. A perfect fall look.

I also love this Calypso skirt with them and a cute Mason top or the L’Agence smocked blouse depending on where you’re going, and I love the Rick Owens jacket over all of it…

A hat would be great as well. The felt one above is from Tilly’s but Eugenia Kim and Eric Javitz also make great ones for the occasion. And I love a final bit of color with the Burberry tote below…

Dirty Beaches, “Lone Runner”

Dirty Beaches – Lone Runner by passionweiss

The Cramps meet The Damned meet Nick Cave… Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches‘ track “Lone Runner” off of his latest release Badlands has lots of layers of nostalgia which I love. Totally unrelated photo of my friend Isaac dancing at a club in Moscow from ages ago above, maybe 2003.
