There are very few store openings that can impress me. When the late Alexander McQueen opened his boutique in LA it was pretty phenomenal. He had Beth Ditto and The Gossip play and the crowd was stellar to say the least. Photographer Julius Shulman‘s new book “Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis” By Sam Lubell and Douglas Woods with a foreword by Judy McKee comes out in April from Rizzoli New York. Shulman, who died almost two years ago, is known for documenting the pioneering architecture of Richard Neutra, Charles Eames and others in beautiful stark black and white photographs that to me look like paintings. Phillips de Pury is having an auction of contemporary Russian art on April 15th in London and one of the lots for sale is a series of signed Polaroids from legendary filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.
