Gil Scott-Heron

Music and cultural legend Gil Scott-Heron just released a new song recorded with Jamie xx (below) and an earlier track I am obsessed with that was released last February from his album “I’m New Here” (above). It’s all pretty self explanatory, just listen. An amazing amalgam of soul, trip hop, rap, dance and spoken word. Beyond. LOVE.

Tokyo Milk

Nothing sexier than a brand with a great product inside & out. I am obsessed with the graphics on this little tube of Tokyo Milk shea butter officially called Dead Sexy No. 6 Bon Bon Shea Butter Rich Lotion made from Japanese Green Tea, Mimosa Bark and Dandelion with said Shea Butter.

Moby’s New Album

Moby has a new album coming out on Mute Records. Destroyed, accompanied by a book of his photographs, comes out on May 17th, 2011. You can download three tracks off the album for free on his site. The album is self produced by Moby with Ken Thomas (Cocteau Twins‘ sound engineer) doing the mixing on vintage analog gear. If you’re hanging Continue reading

Directives West Fall 2011 First LA Show

Last night was the FIRST.LA contemporary fashion show organized by Directives West and packed with fun brands, including Twinkle By Wenlan, Whitney Eve, great knits from Yu Yu, lots of cool separates from James Icon and beautiful faux fur pieces from Imposter. I was asked to pick a young designer’s line to showcase and style and Tess Vigil, who actually found me, was the budding talent I chose. She is barely out of the gate, with only one season of her line 50 Dresses under her belt. Continue reading

Vanity Fair, Henry Rollins, etc

The old guard rises again. Recent questionable covers aside Vanity Fair is still one of the best reads in publishing. I FINALLY had a chance to catch up on some of my long overdue magazine reading thanks to countless delays and layovers on the way to Aspen Fashion Week (more on that later, it was actually a really fun 24 hours!) and read the entire March Vanity Fair cover to cover. Each article was better than the last leaving me chilled, inspired, sad, elated, and generally overwhelmed in the exact way a magazine should. I became obsessed with Janet de Cordova and her Continue reading

Tim Hecker, “The Piano Drop”

Amazing what a washed out B&W image and a few well-placed ominous chords can do. Love this track, eerie and effective and yet has a great beat that begs a wicked re-mix. Tim Hecker, “The Piano Drop” is off of his album Ravedeath, 1972 which came out February 14th on Kranky.

Antique Bottles & Sprayers

I love delicate bottles of perfume and old antique bottles and sprayers. My grandmother gave me a few really beautiful ones on one of my trips to Moscow years ago and I still have them sitting on my shelves. I found this great website that sells inexpensive perfume bottles that I’m obsessing over.

Michael Kors in LA

Michael Kors is coming to LA. Rumor has it his first LA boutique will be opening sometime this year at 108 North Robertson Boulevard. His 30th Anniversary Fall 2011 collection is above. I love his chic well put together ladies, though all that fur scares me a little. I am hoping it will give the faux furriers out there some ideas because while I wouldn’t wear the real thing I do like the way it looks thrown over a sleek pantsuit. What is that word I am looking for here? It’s divine…

Chanel Fall 2011

Once again the mixture of high and low, young and old, is brilliant in Chanel‘s Fall 2011 collection. I’m not sure what is going on in Paris with the bulky fabrics and oversized shapes but I do love the separate pieces, the boots, pant suits, trousers and coats are gorgeous. Loving the cut of the pant.

Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto’s show during Paris Fashion Week was always one of my favorite highlights. It was usually at the start of the week so would set the tone for me. I always loved the poetic presentations and thoughtful lines and draping of his silhouettes with the slightest touch of punk rock sensibility. “My Dear Bomb,” Yohji Yamamoto‘s first biography authorized and authored by the man himself along with Ai Mitsuda, is being published by Ludion in June of this year. The volume includes meditations on clothing and life with Yamamoto’s memories and anecdotes, illustrated with drawings by Yamamoto himself. His Fall 2011 collection is below. A retrospective show of Yamamoto’s work opens tomorrow and will be on view at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum from March 12th through July 10th, 2011. www.artbook.com
