Shareen Vintage

A friend of mine shared the secret of Shareen Vintage in a hushed tone over dinner at Dominick’s a few years ago. Shareen Mitchell had for years opened her “girls only” space on North Avenue 21 in downtown LA to those few that had the nose to find her. She is well known in certain circles for having one of the best selections of vintage threads in the country and for unheard of prices. I finally made it to meet her while working at WWD and was lucky enough to be ushered into the back where the best pieces are kept. I loved Shareen and her store immediately and was excited when she announced her plans to open up on the East Coast. She has finally opened up a space that’s a little easier to find than the one she had started doing once a month somewhere outside of the city. Shareen Vintage can now be found in an apartment on the West Side. The hours are still just as odd and the red chiffon dress that flaps from the fire escape is probably the same one she had outside her LA and Venice locations. Prices are still golden ($25 to $85) and the selection still stellar. In LA, she can be found at 350 N Avenue 21 (323.276.6226) and in NYC at 13 West 17th Street on the 2nd floor (212.206.1644). Wednesdays and Thursdays 5pm to 10pm and Saturday noon to 6pm.

Lanvin and H&M

I’m so excited about the collaboration between Lanvin and H&M. I wax poetic endlessly about Alber Elbaz and with good reason because he is one of the greatest designers alive and one of fashions most important talents. It will be a mad dash scramble on November 23rd to get there in time to get some of the gorgeous frocks and separates. Can’t wait!! Brilliant marketing and video as well.

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto‘s show of new photography, The Day After, opens at Pace Gallery on Friday November 5th in New York. The first and third galleries will feature the 2009 Lightning Fields series including nine 58 3/4″ x 47″ single works and two diptychs, each measuring 58 3/4″ x 47’ and now considered Sugimoto’s largest photographs. Sugimoto radically created the Lightning Fields through a method that did not involve the use of a camera. Instead, in his darkroom, he relied on 400,000 volts of electricity produced from a Van der Graaf Generator and various electrical discharge devices of his own design. Opening at The Pace Gallery, 545 West 22nd Street NYC.

Two Door Cinema Club

I am completely obsessed with Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club. Below is the official video for Undercover Martyn from their debut album ‘Tourist History’ which was released earlier this year in March 2010. They’re playing tomorrow night in Los Angeles at The Music Box Theater at 8pm.

Ingrid at Ona Spa

The quest for perfect skin is an ongoing adventure. It took three years in LA and many facials at various places but I finally had a facial to rival the best. Marcia Kilgore was the first person to introduce me to the miraculous facials that transformed my skin years ago so the facialists I’ve gone to since have had very big shoes to fill and very few have come even close to Marcia’s magic touch. When I first visited Bliss Spa back in 1996 it was still called Let’s face It (Marcia always had a sense of humor). She was listed as the Best Facial in the New York Press ‘Best of Issue’ which is how I found her. She changed my skin and life forever and was officially the first person to put me on the road to becoming a beauty product junkie. In other words she spoiled and ruined me. I wouldn’t allow anyone else to give me facials for years and was heartbroken when she moved to London for good. She would on occasion come back to NY and let her old clients come in for a treatment with her but once she moved it was never the same. But Ingrid at Ona Spa impressed me last week. Eres & Longchamp Collaborate

The two eponymous French brands Eres and Longchamp are doing a collaboration for Spring Summer 2011 of what else, bags and bathing suits. In a creative exchange the two brands will trade a bag for a bikini with Longchamp creating the Rivage beach bag for Eres and Eres in turn has created a bikini for Longchamp. The Rivage bag will be available at Eres boutiques just in time for winter break starting in January and the rose petal print bathing suit by Eres for Longchamp will be available shortly thereafter in February at Longchamp boutiques. Kate Moss has also been collaborating with the family owned Longchamp company and doing some of the gorgeous bags I am obsessed with the last few seasons, including the one below available online now.

Famous Last Lines

Darryl Hannah and Hillary Shepard have done it again. Last year the two created Liebrary, a board game to test your literary skills and this year they have done the same for film addicts with Famous Last Lines and Call It!, a fun fast catagory word burst game. I have actually played Liebrary with the rad girls who created it and it is really fun during a dinner party. Nordstroms has just picked up the whole line so you can grab it in time for the holidays and sitting by the fire with the family. I guarantee this will be a good distraction and much more fun than trying to explain to mom why you still insist on arriving for the holidays with wine and a stack of magazines instead of grandchildren.

Andrew Wyeth

I can’t think of any valid excuse to post an image of Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” (1948) other than it is one of my all time favorite paintings and has been for many years. I bought a beautiful first edition of “An American Vision: Three Generations of Wyeth Art” years ago in a used book store on Bleecker Street. N.C. Wyeth (grandfather), Andrew Wyeth (father) and James Wyeth (son) were all painters with their own distinct American voice. MOMA has the painting in their permanent collection and every time I go I have to stand in front of it for a few minutes.

Target Celebrates Go International

Most of us have been guilty of waiting for Target doors to open at an ungodly hour on a Sunday to buy pieces from our favorite designers at incredibly affordable prices. It’s been five years since Target revolutionized the world of fashion and mass market buying and design by introducing their Go International line of collaborations with high end fashion world stars. To celebrate the occasion Target is reissuing 34 dresses from their previously featured designers: Luella Bartley, Tara Jarmon, Paul & Joe, Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, Libertine, Alice Temperley, Erin Fetherston, Jovovich-Hawk, Rogan, Richard Chai, Jonathan Saunders, Thakoon, Tracy Feith, Rodarte, Zac Posen and of course Tucker. The pieces will be available briefly starting March 13, 2011 through April 10, 2011 at most Target stores and online. A design from Alice Temperley’s own Fall ’08 line above.
