Russian Football Players

I’ve taken so many photographs over the years I sometimes forget what I’ve done. Kind of like re-reading a book I read ten years ago and a quarter of the way through realizing that something is familiar. I found this small print recently and remembered the series I did for a friend of mine’s German magazine back in 2003. I only did a handful, maybe a dozen or so shots but I love these images and am now on a mission to dig out the negatives and start making large prints of them. I can’t remember his name, this Russian kid who was playing American football in Moscow with a guy I was seeing at the time. But I love his expression and body language.

Glenn Kaino

LA-based artist Glenn Kaino’s clever and well done exhibition Safe/Vanish does what art is meant to do at times: it makes you smile knowingly and laugh out loud. Kaino explores the idea of celebrity not only in entertainment but in the art world as well. The site-specific installation of magic art world wands is brilliant. As is the idea of filling a trunk with celebrity secrets ranging from the personal to the professional. This year LAXART also celebrated their 5th Anniversary as the leading non-profit exhibition space in Los Angeles. The show closes October 30th. www.laxart.org

Dirty Girl

Two of my all time favorite filmmakers John Hughes and John Waters got married, put a Riot Grrl soundtrack to it and produced a love child called “Dirty Girl”. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to see it back in Los Angeles. No doubt there will be minor comparisons made to the sweet and funny Easy A which just came out but this is a whole different teenage angst animal with even more subtext and soul. First time feature director Abe Sylvia wrote the script seven years ago and producer Rob Paris read it five years ago. Since then the two have followed their gut and persisted in making what is a fantastic film that will surely go down in the indie cult classics book. Theirs is a Hollywood story to make you smile and remember that people still make films because they simply believe in them and have no choice but to give up a decade of their lives in pursuit of something out of the ordinary. One of the best parts is hearing Mr. Paris recount his recent moment in Toronto when one of his partners tapped him on the shoulder midway thru the screening to tell him that Harvey Weinstein was at that moment buying the film outside the screening room. Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2011

I imagine it was an incredibly bittersweet moment for Sarah Burton who has taken over as head of design for Alexander McQueen after his tragic death earlier this year. Ms. Burton worked alongside McQueen for 15 years and has managed to maintain his voice while adding a distinctly feminine touch to her first collection. It’s beautiful and there must have been a few tears shed throughout and after because in the end, it’s still hard to look at the clothes and not be reminded that Alexander “Lee” McQueen is gone forever. Sadly and needlessly, one less true artist in the world.

Hermes Spring Summer 2011

Perhaps it’s all the riding crops, corsets and leather straps but Hermes always has an undercurrent of the Marquis De Sade for me. What is there not to rave over and get obsessed with in Jean Paul Gaultier’s collections for Hermes. This is sadly Gaultier’s last collection for Hermes as he has decided to step down as Creative Director. His first presentation for the house in 2003 was equally as breathtaking as this one and all the ones in between. I don’t think he’s had a misstep yet. I love how his classic looks have so much understated elegance, narrative and rebelliousness all in one breath. A perfect representation of the brand itself. He will be missed but I am excited to see what his replacement, Christophe Lemaire will do next season.

Collette Dinnigan Spring Summer 2011

I have a soft spot for Collette Dinnigan’s gracefully delicate, beautiful clothes. I love that a lot of the looks can be dressed up with strappy heels or dressed down with the perfect boot or chunky leather belt. That’s been a favorite look of mine for a long time and I tend to roll that style over from one season to the next. There’s an effortless rock ‘n roll chic to it when styled one way and a very ladylike tea drinking look when styled the other way. Have I mentioned I happen to like both?

Sapp Coffee Shop

There is a divey little Thai restaurant on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Kingsley, one block east of Harvard, that will transplant you to Thailand better than an exhausting flight. I introduced some friends to Sapp Coffee Shop recently and the consensus was the same: it’s AMAZING. The food is authentic Thai in every sense of the word and very inexpensive. No alcohol is sold but they allow you to bring your own which is even better. They don’t have a bottle opener much less a corkage fee so remember to bring yours. If you forget you can always pop next door to El Adobe Market and buy one for $2. The place opens at 7am and closes at 8:30pm every night which leaves plenty of time to enjoy Jumbo’s Clown Room next door. Don’t count on anyone answering the phone, speaking English or taking reservations, just go and enjoy. 5183 Hollywood Blvd, 323.665.1035. And they don’t have a website so don’t bother with that either…

Creed

I’m a little obsessed with CREED. I gave one of their perfume launches coverage in the magazine I worked for last year and was lucky enough to be put in touch with Adam Brecht, their amazing press representative here in the US. The company itself is based out of Paris and has been around since 1760, having been passed from father to son ever since. CREED has also served more than ten royal houses and is one of the oldest family businesses in the world. The second release in the new CREED Royal Exclusives collection, Spice and Wood is arriving November 1st. It’s handmade for men but women seem to enjoy it as well. CREED Windsor is coming November 1st as well. Love it.
