BCBG Max Azria Spring Summer 2011

I find something to wear from BCBG every season and this time wasn’t much different. Simple, straightforward shifts, dresses and jumpers in neutral solid tones glided down the BCBG Max Azria runway this morning. While it’s nothing new and somewhat safe it doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s really pretty and wearable, will sell well and last a few seasons. And that’s really all a cute versatile dress needs to be. The soundtrack was fantastic and ethereal as well. Loved it.

Tadashi Spring Summer 2011

I love what Tadashi Shoji has been doing the last couple of seasons. Tadashi has been designing dresses for over thirty years but the brand has come a long way in these last few. I am head over heels for the two dresses below. This season was inspired by “Renaissance Frescos.. an homage to 15th Century elegance and romance”. Todays presentation was really well done and inspiration aside, I think it was quite modern and chic.

Cynthia Connolly in NYC

California born and D.C. punk scene raised Cynthia Connolly has a new show of photographs opening tonight in NYC. Cynthia has been shooting photographs for probably thirty years or at least since I can remember. When I was a senior at Bard her boyfriend at the time Ian Mackaye was kind enough to drive up to be in my senior film project and she took the most amazing photograph of us and my little film crew. She also took photos for the legendary book Banned in DC which documented the early years of the DC punk scene. I have been following her work for a long time. MIX N’ MATCH by Cynthia Connolly at The Quality Mending Co (formerly Eleven) opens September 10, 6-8pm at 15 Prince Street. The exhibition goes through to the end of December.

Hexa by Kuho

There are not a lot of designers left who put this much time and thought into their invitations, granted a lot don’t have the money either. Everything is emailed, Facebooked etc. Only a handful of the older ones still even send out hard invites which is fine by me since I am the queen of redeuce reuse recycle however when a young designer does put this much effort into the art of an invitation I love it! This sweet and quirky invite arrived for the Hexa by Kuho show this Saturday. It made me miss Paris…

I’m Still Here

Joaquin Phoenix in I’M STILL HERE, a Magnolia Pictures release. Photo courtesy of Magnolia Pictures

Joaquin Phoenix’s much-anticipated documentary “I’m Still Here” directed by Casey Affleck has something for everyone. A man on a journey, a fumble along the way, a cross roads, failure, and finally redemption. It’s a beautiful piece of performance art. Carolee Schneemann and Karen Finley make note.

There are very few actors who take risks to create gutsy statements on what goes on in our culture and I think this is one of them. I love the pseudo documentary aspect because really who is to say where the line starts and crosses from reality into fiction. Continue reading

Raquel Allegra

I saw Raquel Allegra’s first fashion show a couple of years back while I was still working for WWD and instantly went nutz over the line using it repeatedly in editorial shoots. She deconstructs and sculpts sweaters and T shirts into unique pieces ranging from tops to dresses that undulate and fall just right on the body. There is an effortless punk rock chic to her designs that I gravitate towards. I am so excited to see what she is up to during New York Fashion Week. Will keep you posted… www.raquelallegra.com

Obsessed… Tiffany Bags!

Beyond obsessed with these bags that could easily pay my rent for the next year hence I won’t be buying one but a girl can dream and drool. Tiffany just launched a collection of handbags, ranging from clutches to totes to satchels, in a dozen of its U.S. stores and online. The designers of these gorgeous treasures are Richard Lambertson and John Truex. I believe a Thank You is in order.

They also did these insane little clutches…

Martha Davis Shoes

About a year and a half ago I was walking through the little shops on Filmore Street in San Francisco and I saw these amazing kind of quirky well designed shoes very reminiscent of Dries Van Noten with a little Martin Margiela thrown in. The designer it turned out was brand new and it was only her first season but she was already selling at local boutiques. Martha Davis earned her BFA degree in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and is San Francisco based. She has been producing her quiet subtle collection since 2009 after a fifteen year career in industrial design which clearly shows in the shoes themselves. In addition to the cool women’s line she also does a great men’s loafer. Some of my favorites from the most recent collection are above. I love this line!

Jean Paul Gaultier and La Perla in Beverly Hills

Obsessed doesn’t begin to define how I feel about Jean Paul Gaultier. If I could reprint the whole lookbook I just finished perusing I would but alas I am a slave to aesthetics and it just wouldn’t be right for the layout. Trust me when I tell you that this line is sick. And I want everything in it. Ok so JPG isn’t really coming to Beverly Hills but he has collaborated with one of my favorite lingerie lines La Perla to create a super sexy line of corsets, bodysuits and cone-inspired bras in a variety of beautiful fabrics and colors inspired by Gaultier’s iconic designs from the nineties. La Perla is hosting an exclusive preview of the limited edition collection at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills on Friday, September 10th. The collection will go on sale at Neiman Mrcus in November and will also be available in La Perla boutiques nationwide, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, specialty boutiques and online. www.laperla.com
