The Tillman Story

Pat Tillman and his brother Kevin from Amir Bar Lev’s ‘The Tillman Story’, Above, Photo Donald Lee

This film has stirred up a fair share of controversy. I saw it at Sundance earlier this year and loved it. I am a die hard fan of great documentary films and this is one of them. The story is told well and succinctly and there are a lot of layers to unearth. Pat Tillman’s story has by now become one of legend, told, retold, and resold. It is only with this documentary that the truth really unfolds. The young man who gave up a professional career in football to join the Army Rangers in 2002 became a fast symbol of American patriotic pride but the man behind the image, created mostly by the government following his death was much quieter, more complex and a hero in a lot of ways the government did not appreciate. An unflinching desire for honesty and truth overwhelms this well-told documentary with the help of Pat’s family. The Tillman Story opened in theaters last week and is directed by Amir Bar-Levy and produced by John Battsek. Go see this film. It is important on so many levels and speaks volumes about war, government, pride, propaganda, and of course, family.

Venice Beach Wines

I want to eat this photograph. Venice Beach Wines opened in 2006 but luckily I am still discovering all kinds of hidden foodie gems around the city and am thrilled to have been introduced to this one. The food and wine are amazing and I love that it’s slightly off the beaten path. Plenty of great wine and well thought out charcuterie & cheese plates along with sandwiches and salads that are simple but with just the right amount of detail (there is a ‘lambwich’ with pimenton smoked lamb, roast tomatoes, carmelized onions, mint chimichurri and manchego). They are open for lunch, dinner and snacks in between. 529 Rose Avenue in Venice, 310.606.2529, Sunday thru Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday & Saturday 11am-11pm

Audi A8

I am a car ADDICT and have been for years. In the past I’ve gravitated towards vintage gems like Alfa Romeos and Fiats which I have often used in my shoots and granted I’m still drawn to them but once I got a taste of current luxury cars there was no turning back. Last winter I was lucky enough to drive the Aston Martin DBS for a week followed by a long weekend with a gorgeous DB9. This week I’ve got the Audi A8. There is really no point in waiting the entire week to jump up and down and declare how obsessed I am with this car. I drove it all weekend though admittedly driving around LA and or even Malibu is like slow water torture because you really can’t drive it the way it’s supposed to be driven. Where the hell do you drive a gorgeous car like this in LA when all the punk rock has been sucked out of you with this city’s insane traffic laws and violations for sneezing wrong let alone driving even five miles over the speed limit?!? I didn’t have time to drive out to Palm Springs though may still play hooky sometime this week to do just that. And let me state the obvious that it’s virtually impossible to drive the speed limit in this car because pressing on that gas pedal is like sliding into silk sheets or melted butter. It’s slick and sweet. The car may look big from the outside but once you get behind the wheel it feels tiny and sporty and while the Audi A8 seems like the proper preppy sister to Martin’s player bad boy it’s actually quite sexy itself. It also has all kinds of new techie features but I will let you discover those on your own test drive. All that matters is that I don’t want to give it back. A warning, I did just get my passport renewed… The car goes on the market in the US in November.

The American

Anton Corbijn does not know how to take a bad photo or make a bad film. I love his lightly affected pacing and think this is an amazing follow up to his film from a few years ago, the beautifully done Control about iconic musicians Joy Division. So I know this is going to be great. Plus it’s George Clooney in a hot sexy mysterious sniper spy movie. Love it. The American opens this Wednesday September 1st, 2010. Mr. Corbijn has also created a book of photographic stills from the film set and behind the scenes called Inside The American which will be released this week as well.

New Orleans Love

My first time ever in New Orleans was earlier this year. I went for a much too brief weekend trip and stayed at The Ritz. Yeah, not bad. It was everything you would expect and much more. The city is amazing and I fell in love with it immediately which is a rare thing for me and American cities. Admittedly only three exist in my world: New York, Los Angeles and Baltimore, for family loyalty sake. I added New Orleans to that list and vowed to return as soon and as often as possible. This morning there was a story on NPR about the recovery of the city post Katrina, post spill, post everything it’s endured in such a brief sad moment. The story made me want to not only revisit immediately but spread the word about this magical little city that is so full of energy, history, life, food and drinks! If you can stay at The Ritz all the better but if not there are so many amazing tiny gems throughout, it really doesn’t matter where you stay. Just go.

Give it to Me

There are certain works of art I just want to own. That’s why the art world is here right?… Sometimes something just resonates so powerfully that I can not let it go for years and both this song and video make me sublimely happy. It’s uncomplicated delicious fun. The song is perfect and the video is pretty genius, the art direction, editing and styling are beautiful. And Pharrell is just stupid hot in this… can you do that little rumba move again please? Enjoy the sweet bliss.

Last Night At The Chateau…

It may sound like the opening of my diary but it’s not. Lauren Weisberger, the author of the infamous Devil Wears Prada novel has a new book out this week. I remember very clearly when Prada came out sitting across from another editor bitching about how dare this girl write a novel about simply paying ones dues in an industry after working somewhere for all of three months. It was a relatively uncomplicated read which I finished cover to cover in the scope of a weekend and when the film came out I admittedly loved every guilty minute. Especially the scene with the steak as it recalled a myriad of my own assisting moments but alas, that is a different story. I am looking forward to this one solely on the title alone which I believe will be the victim of a swift movie rights sale immediately if not sooner. I imagine we will see this one in theaters within two years starring Jennifer Lawrence who by then will likely have given up her reign as the new indie kid in town. Last Night At Chateau Marmont is out in bookstores tomorrow August 31, 2010.

Killer of Sheep

I first saw Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep my freshman year at Bard. I instantly decided that this was the kind of film I wanted to make. A quiet observation of life encapsulated in a moving photograph. The film wasn’t released until 2007 even though is was shot thirty years earlier in the Watts section of Los Angeles as Burnett’s Senior film project at UCLA. As legend goes he didn’t have the funds to purchase the music rights to whatever tracks he used so the film stayed an underground classic for decades until the film community finally raised whatever couple hundred grand was needed to buy the music rights for the film. This is truly one of the greatest films of all time. It is beautiful without trying, moving and thought provoking. I have been obsessed with it for years and if you’ve spent more than fifteen minutes with me you’ve probably heard me wax poetic about it. This clip is one of a thousand that should be watched again and again.
