RYOT co-founders David Darg and Bryn Mooser directed a short documentary that is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19th (check out the trailer and a QA with filmmaker Bryn Mooser below). “The Rider and The Storm” follows devoted surfer and iron worker Timmy Brennan who lost everything, including his house in Breezy Point, Queens when Sandy hit NYC last October. It’s a beautiful film that quietly hits home not only on the jarring effects of Sandy and continued impact of September 11th (Timmy works on the reconstruction of the “Freedom Tower” by day) but also the importance of maintaining an environmental connection to the world around us, even in NYC and especially when times are tough. The film is executive produced by Olivia Wilde. I loved it… And check out what else RYOT (*pronounced RIOT!) is up to. They not only post daily news from around the world but allow you to become an organic grassroots part of the solution to what’s going on around us through donations, petitions, and the chance to volunteer for change. I was visiting a friend’s place last week and she had this print called “Girl,” by British artist Charlie Mackasey hanging in her bathroom that I fell in love with. The print is pretty easy to find and order online. I love it’s quiet energy, which so many of his other paintings and drawings have.
I love the message behind the Chime For Change organization, co-founded by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini, Salma Hayek Pinault, and Beyoncé who will headline THE SOUND OF CHANGE LIVE concert on June 1st at London’s Twickenham Stadium, which will also be broadcast around the world. Along with Beyoncé, Ellie Goulding, Florence + the Machine, HAIM, Iggy Azalea, John Legend, Laura Pausini, Rita Ora, Timbaland and a slew of others will perform to “raise funds and awareness for girls’ and women’s empowerment around the world.” Some of the groups Chime for Change works with and benefits are The Kering, and Catapult Foundations. Love it!
I’m not usually a fan of the clear plastic trench, which I don’t always find flattering, but I fell in love with this Valentino one above as well as the transparent PVC one by Opening Ceremony and the Wanda Nylon raincoat. April showers and all that… even though I still can’t always tell the seasons apart in LA. Is it spring yet?
