Anna Dello Russo Beyond

It seems musicians and actors are not the only celebrities with fragrances these days. The fashion world has plenty of its own names to fawn over. The infamous and gorgeous fashion director of Japanese Vogue, Anna Dello Russo, is set to release her namesake fragrance Beyond this December exclusively online and in time for holiday shopping. I am always in awe of Ms. Dello Russo’s style and frankly, her beautiful self so I imagine the scent will be equally as breathtaking. Can’t wait. She is also featured in next month’s W Magazine in a story shot by Juergen Teller.

Dior Watch

The holidays are almost here and it is time to start obsessing over gifts and such. With that in mind… I’m obsessed with this new Mini La D de Dior watch that just came out in September. It is light, airy and sits on the wrist like a slinky bracelet. I love the simplicity of the design as well. The retail price of the steel version is $2,850.00 and it is available in Dior Boutiques Nationwide.

Harry & David Pop Up

I’m on a gift basket kick so the new Harry & David pop up shop that opened up last night in West Hollywood couldn’t have come at a better time. The infamous mail order and online catalog that is responsible for many gifts laid at my door will be here throughout the holidays until January 1st. Though they began with and are best known for their phenomenal pears they are fully stocked with every confection and gift basket worthy item that comes to mind. There are also a ton of goodies in the catalog like chicken pot pies delivered to your door that you won’t find in the store so it’s best to scope out both. Harry & David Pop Up Shop, 108 N Robertson, West Hollywood.

To Read and Browse in LA

My mom once told me that my father used to spend hours in the book stores of Moscow and drag me along with him when I was a child. I like to think I take after him in that regard. Before I moved to New York City full time I used to come down from Bard in my late teens for a day in the city and discovered the most wonderful place on earth: The Strand bookstore. I rarely bought a book elsewhere for the next fifteen years. Not only did they have brand new review copies at half off (which they now do online as well) but they also had thousands of classic books at insanely low prices, as well as the newest and most amazing art books. My place in New York is literally lined with thousands of books bought at The Strand. Plus there was something romantic and very old school NYC about spending hours wandering through dusty aisles of books that I could never get enough of. I’ve done it on every continent, every city I’ve gone to since, and always with the hope of finding some long lost treasure I haven’t seen or read yet. When I first started spending time in LA Continue reading

Brice Marden

Matthew Marks is opening a new show from Brice Marden called “Letters” next week. This will be the iconic artist’s first one-person exhibition in New York since his 2006 Museum of Modern Art retrospective. The seven large canvases and thirteen works on paper included in this exhibition, along with 21 smaller drawings begun in China are the largest cohesive body of work the artist has made since his 1991 Cold Mountain series. Brice Marden: Letters will be on view at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York, 522 West 22nd Street, from October 29 through December 23, 2010.

Kanye West’s Runaway

It is not easy to be born an artist no matter what anyone tells you. To have the need to say what you feel, in anger, pain or joy and share it with the world regardless of what comes of it. I genuinely respect Kanye West as an artist, a cultural icon and a creative voice in the dialogue around us. He is truly talented and deserves major props for his skills and brutal honesty, which I’ve always respected. While “Runaway” has some great moments– the opening and closing scenes of Kanye running, the ballerina’s dancing, the young boy in a red hood– Continue reading

Willow Smith’s Video for “Whip My Hair”

Willow Smith – Whip My Hair (Official Video) [www.extasyradio.com] found on Pop

This is damn good. That is all I am saying. Will Smith’s 9-year-old daughter Willow Smith had her first music video released today and it is actually really amazing. Willow, her art director, editor, stylist, video director and the team deserve a huge round of applause. Seriously, damn good. We could go into a whole tirade about how it helps to literally be born into the business and have every resource imaginable at your disposal but why bother. That all goes without saying. Frankly I can think of a whole slew of people who have had entire industries handed to them on a silver platter and what they’ve produced isn’t half as good. So kudos, love it! Great song, great video. Addictive.

Mykita, Fashion Week and Other Happenings in JAPAN

This week Mykita, the eight year old Berlin born and based line of architecturally constructed eyewear will open their sixth freestanding boutique in the world during Japan’s Fashion Week which starts today through Friday. They were just in LA last week showing their latest and greatest at Soho House in West Hollywood. I became a little obsessed with the Mykita line as I listened to one of the founders Moritz Krueger describe the process and thought behind each component of the collection. Each pair of glasses and sunglasses is hand-made and constructed with thought and care. It’s a seemingly neglected craft that most companies forget because sunglasses have become the gateway to licensing for a myriad of brands and there seems to be little artistry left for those accessories. Mykita keeps the tradition of art, design and detailed construction alive and well. They have also recently collaborated with a number of designers including Alexandre Herchcovitch for the last two seasons. I also love the beautiful lookbook shot by Mark Borthwick.

All to celebrate Hans Ulrich Obrist’s Interviews Volume 2. This Saturday October 23rd at 4pm, MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Avenue. A photo of Marina Abramovic’s performance piece last Spring at MOMA in NYC above.
