Henry Miller’s Book Of Friends

This morning Weesie greeted me with an extra warm smile and a hug. I was aware for the first time that the dress she wore clung to her figure. It was made of a very soft material, very feminine, which women seldom wear. To my genuine surprise she said, as she pulled away from me- “I don’t want you to answer me immediately. Tomorrow or the next day will do. What I would like to know is what you think about God. Do you believe there is one? Do you like him? Don’t tell me what they told you in church– I know all that crap– Tell me what you yourself honestly think. Do that for me, won’t you?”

The hot sultry air, the way her dress clung to her body, the taste of her lips, all combined to give her words anther connotation. It was the most unusual question, in any event, and especially from a girl her age. It was the first time the subject had come up since those days when Stanley and I talked on his doorstep in the evenings.

From Henry Miller’s “Book Of Friends”, published in 1976, where he recounts his teenage adventures growing up in Brooklyn. I’ve been reading the book and something about these paragraphs just made me stop. It is amazing to me how he can say so much, so simply, in so few words.

Balmain Spring Summer 2011

I’m not going to lie, sometimes I feel vindicated before the eyes of my mom and my aunts who gave me so much drama while growing up and dressing exactly like the models on Balmain’s Spring Summer runway. I took my mom to a Chanel show in Paris years ago and she was horrified to find a runway full of girls that looked a little like me in high school. It didn’t help that it was the same season Karl Lagerfeld had a French electro-punk band playing in the middle of the runway. I don’t think most of my Fendi bag carrying cousins still understand why I and not they ended up as a fashion editor. I think it’s funny. I love Christophe Decarnin’s punk girls and will never tire of this look. I like the idea of proper girls aspiring to this. I don’t think it’s ironic in the least that England, the land of propriety and manners gave birth to punk. It all makes perfect sense to me.

Ann Demeulemeester Spring Summer 2011

Ann Demeulemeester has always followed her Goth path and is one of my favorite shows to go to during Paris Fashion Week along with Martine Sitbon, Comme Des Garcons, and Isabel Marant. They all have very different voices but the one thing they have in common is the strength of that singular fashion voice and a style aesthetic for a very specific girl. At times the girls overlap and their voices become the perfect chorus. Though her palette and aesthetic rarely shift, Ann Demeulemeester’s clothes always feel fresh and new and rarely disappoint.

Marina and The Diamonds

Love this song and video. It’s off of Marina and The Diamonds’ debut album which was released in February 2010. Love her voice, it reminds me a little of Siouxsie but with more pop.

Mixed Pleasures, Prints & Stripes for Spring Summer 2011

Jil Sander and Versus, Above

Prada and Milly, Above

Balenciaga and Prada, Above, Rodarte, Below

I love mixing patterns and prints with stripes and polka dots. When it’s done right it is so beautiful to look at. I did a shoot for WWD a couple of years ago with the idea and am still obsessed with it.

Carven Spring Summer 2011

Guillaume Henry has revived the brand that couturier Madame Carven created in 1945. Only in its third season Carven is already sold in every kind of department store and boutique. In LA you can find it at Curve, Barney’s, Opening Ceremony (whom they also did a collaboration on a dress with that’s in stores now), Ron Herman and Satine. I am completely obsessed. Every look has a flirtatious mischievous rebellious and pretty flavor. The punk princess married the Ska musician and won’t stop having fun. Head over heels for the whole collection. The history of the French house is really interesting as well. Their website is a little hard to navigate but the clothes make it all worth it.

7th Annual San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival

The 7th Annual San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival is approaching and I’m excited to finally go. I wasn’t able to attend last year because my schedule wouldn’t allow it but this year I have marked November 17th through 21st in red on my calendar and will be there. The festival is a smorgasbord of wine tasting, cooking classes, chef competitions, the tastemakers dinner series and obviously a ton of great food and wine. There is also a live auction presented by Wine Spectator which takes place during a luncheon with a menu filled with specialties from Chefs Katsuaya, Roy Yamaguchi and Ron Oliver. November is too long for me to wait so next weekend I am starting the foodie rounds by going to the The Gourmet Experience, a food, luxury and lifestyle show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds October 9th and 10th. Participating winery Adelaida Cellars‘ fields are pictured above.

Anne Valerie Hash Spring Summer 2011

Anne Valerie Hash has been doing her line since 2001 and has always maintained an artistic edge. What is there not to love about this entire cohesive well thought out collection? Sexy, feminine yet still maintaining her stylish edge. Beautifully cut, draped and presented in my favorite muted tones.

Courtney Love’s New Animated Film

Let me just say for the record, I love Courtney Love. I am not interested in her skills as a parent or any details of her personal life. I don’t care. That part of her life is none of my business. What interests me is Courtney the musician, Courtney the personality, Courtney the artist. I love this new animated film she commissioned from Michael Mouris. I think it’s brilliant and comes at a perfect time for her. And I love the new album and this song. I think Courtney deserves some serious acknowledgment and I get tired of people discrediting her. She is talented regardless of her personal flaws. And really, who are we to judge?
