Julien MacDonald Spring Summer 2011

I’m pretty much obsessed with this whole uber sexy flowing collection. Love Julien Macdonald’s glamazon sexy girls though a couple of them could admittedly use just a little more meat to complete the whole glamazon idea as their hair seems to weigh more than they do. That doesn’t change the fact that I want pretty much everything I see and am dying to wear all of it with my favorite slouchy worn in brown leather lace up riding boots. Yum. www.julienmacdonald.com

Antonio Berardi Spring Summer 2011

The String Fellow Hawks

Three of my favorite talented boys and their latest. If you happen to get the chance to see Dex on vocals & guitar, Eric on drums and Steve on guitar and bass playing around LA, I highly recommend it. The reincarnation of San Francisco born La Vendi also known as The String Fellow Hawks will not be local for long. Eric and Dex circa 2006 in San Francisco, above. Kids, ignore all the smoking. It does not make it cool! Steve and Eric are quitting, they promise. They’re sending back the check. Continue reading

Sass & Bide Spring Summer 2011

Smart, sexy, edgy and strong. Let me count the ways I love thee Sass & Bide. The label was formed in 1999 by Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton. Every season they amaze me with something new and exciting to love. LOVE. None of the magazines I ever worked for allowed me to go to the shows in London which is a shame because some of the most innovative and interesting designers still come out of the UK. Wish I was there this week. www.sassandbide.com

J’Adore Dior, Diorama

The art of perfume is an elaborate craft and some scents take years to perfect so I find it exciting when a new one emerges. Dior is launching two new scents for Fall. The newest Diorama Eau de Parfum coming out in October 2010 will be available exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue. In 1949, Edmond Roudnitska created Diorama, the second fragrance launched by Monsieur Dior. Now, Dior Perfumer Francois Demachy pays homage to the original with the second offering in the “Les Creations de Monsieur Dior” collection after the launch of Diorissimo Eau de Parfum in November 2009. From Le Domaine de Manon, the exclusive flower producer for the Dior House in Grasse, France, the scent is derived from Bergamot, Plum Accord and Indian Jasmine with Turkish Rose Essence, Cedar and Cumin all blended to make one of beauty’s best scents. Also hitting counters in October is a reinterpretation of the classic J’adore which will be available exclusively at Nordstrom’s. Love the gorgeous bottle design for J’adore and the vintage Diorama, below.

Soapology NYC

I stumbled on the cutest bath and body shop on 8th avenue between 13th and 14th Street. Soapology has apparently been there for three years but its news to me. They have a great array of handmade soaps and scrubs made from everything you can imagine, walnuts, coffee, jasmine etc. I tried the Water Lilly and Jasmine shower gel on my hands and arms which you are supposed to use daily, followed by the Walnut Polisher which left my skin a bit oily but with the weekly recommended Coffee scrub my skin became like silk. It was amazing. I’m a little obsessed. I have a strict rule about not buying new beauty products until I am done with the ones I have so will have to buy the threesome in a few months but luckily they have mail order as well as another shop on Park Avenue and 22nd where Limelight used to be. Apparently Limelight’s long ago defunct club space is now a market. Again, who knew? www.soapologyNyc.com

The Lambs Club at The Chatwal Hotel

The picture above pretty much says it all. I love and romanticize old New York like any good New Yorker would, even one that has been relocated West as of late. I like to imagine what it would have been like had I been around to wax poetic during Dorothy Parker’s era or sip bourbon with the Fitzgerald crowd. The original Stanford White-designed building that is now The Chatwal Hotel was the epicenter of American theater for the 20th century and opened in 1905 as home to the prestigious Lambs, America’s first professional theatrical club. The hotel’s restaurant, The Lambs Club was this fashion week’s star where a lot of the after parties and dinners took place. I stopped by Tara Subkoff’s Imitation dinner after the show Wednesday night and ended up bumping into Continue reading

Kathy Kemp & Anna

Kathy and I met almost fifteen years ago when I first moved to the East Village and she had just opened up her now infamous little shop on 3rd Street called Anna, named after her grandmother. I’ve been trading my photographs for her clothes for over ten years so in theory we each have an archive of each others’ work from the past decade. I love her designs, she has a knack for perfect simple dresses and separates that have just the right amount of a detail here and there, a ruche or a bias cut to make it just right. The pieces lasts for years too. I’ve had dresses and blazers of hers that I put away for a few seasons and brought out again and they feel just as current as when I first got them. I stopped by the store the other day and saw the cutest dresses for fall in great neutral tones like baby pink and nude. There was one in the window that drew me in as usual. If you are in the neighborhood stop by or call and order one from far away. www.annanyc.com

Tony Oursler

Tony Oursler has used film and video projections as a mode of sculpture for years. His work explores our obsession with technology and has a layer of creepiness that I love. I became obsessed with his talking sculptures at one of The Whitney Biennials years ago and was excited to find out he has a new show opening up next month in New York at Lehmann Maupin gallery called Peak. This exhibition continues his exploration of technology and its affects on the human psyche by digging into the virtual world we live in with a focus on the themes of obsession, escapism, isolation and sexual fetish. His projections combine glass, clay, steel and other raw materials. Lehmann Maupin, 201 Chrystie Street, October 7th through December 10th, 2010.

Imitation Spring Summer 2011

There are times during a fashion show you realize you are watching not only a designer at work but also an artist. That is the case with Tara Subkoff’s Imitation line. I can only imagine that Ms. Subkoff’s personal health battles have played a heavy influence and like any artist she has utilized her creative outlets to deal with the healing process. Last nights show was a well thought out and put together presentation of beautiful clothes, ideas, nostalgia and what I am obsessed with, desire. There was desire in the simplicity of the clothes, the music, even the subdued quiet lighting which made you want to look harder and see more. The theme of the evening seemed to be memory and a longing for a time that has passed but Continue reading
