Please Take Me Off The Guest List

There is definitely something unexpectedly exhausting and weary about being constantly on, out and about and in the world of frenzied work travel, parties and socializing that most of us don’t count on when dreaming of fame and fortune. Please Take Me Off the Guest List peels away at the fantasy and is the latest of creative collaborations by New York artists and friends Zachary Lipez, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Stacy Wakefield. Zachary Lipez’s essays are juxtaposed with Zinners photos and designed by Ms. Wakefield. The book will be released in October 2010. www.akashicbooks.com

Milly Spring Summer 2011

There is definitely a trend of mixing and matching prints with stripes going on this season, which I am a huge fan of. I have also been a fan of Milly’s for a long time and always gravitate towards her girly fun vintage with a modern flair dressing. I loved the great separates and dresses shown yesterday but wasn’t really into the chunky jewelry or accessories which felt a little heavy handed as the bold prints were already the perfect pitch and said it all in a fun quirky way. Regardless, I want most of what came down the runway and am obsessing over the dresses, stripes, prints and that gorgeous bold Kelly green.

Tory Burch Spring Summer 2011

I am definitely digging the prim and proper direction of the collections I am seeing. Love Tory Burch’s fun downtown hipster girl with a vintage Seventies vibe. That seems to be the theme of the season and Tory’s girls yesterday were well put together in a casual way with a slight dash of sexy demure. Obsessed with the chiffon knee length dresses, the bags and the shoes, of course. There was a gorgeous pinstripe suit that I freaked over as well. Love!!! Must have the shoes below.

La Vetrina, B5 and Jerome C Rousseau

When I started covering shows in Milan in 1999 an Italian friend of mine introduced me to what still remains in my mind the best shoe store in the world, La Vetrina. I jotted down that address and kept going back season after season to the little off the way shop that had the best selection of Michel Perry, Prada, and completely brand new designers I had never heard of. After fifteen years the head buyer Barbara Beryl Villa has left the eponymous boutique and started her own as of last September, called B5. She carries everything from one of my current obsessions Jerome C. Rousseau, Maloles and Robert Clergerie. I saw Jerome’s new collection Continue reading

Tom Ford Is A Genius.

Gucci Men’s Collection shot for Spoon Paris, January 2001, Above

Tom Ford is a genius. But that’s not news. I have always loved and respected what he’s done with clothing design, art direction, branding and marketing. I also knew from the start that given all that, he would make a brilliant film director.

Nothing defines a true artist more than setting ones own boundaries and not accepting other people’s rules for oneself while knowing instinctively and fearlessly what direction to go in and making it a success time and time again. Tom Ford is all that. Therefore it goes without saying he is the only one to save us from what we have become. Continue reading

The Fashion Flu

When I first started covering fashion shows in the late 90’s I realized there was a pattern to my cold and flu season that directly mirrored the fashion seasons. The Fashion Flu as I began to call it was nothing short of an unrelenting friend who called non stop in New York, came to visit without permission in Milan and stayed amidst resentment through the end of Paris. I know I am not the only one and quickly learned that all my homeopathic organic cold remedies were never going to beat the Fashion Flu because it would continue to get passed back and forth with all the kissing and hellos and long lost friends. All compounded by the fact that you run non stop for a month from shows to meetings, dinners, appointments, re-sees and back again with no time to sleep properly or Continue reading

Eve Sussman’s The Rape of The Sabine Women

Eve Sussman’s original film based on classical paintings by Poussin, Rubens and especially Jacques-Louis David’s “Intervention of the Sabine Women” of 1799 had its US premier in the New York art world in February 2007. The Rape of The Sabine Women is pretty extraordinary and there aren’t a lot of films like this. The cinematography is gorgeous and this is the first time the film is being shown in New York since its premier after having traveled the international film festival circuit. The film is dense and heavily loaded with art world references, sexual politics and a modern fashion conscious take on an ancient subject matter. If you have a moment to break from the fashion frenzy stop and see this show.

Monique Lhuillier Spring Summer 2011

Red carpet ready with a flash of Valentino. Lots of red, lots of frill, lots of flowers. Loved the flower print gowns and the well tailored trouser looks.

Chris Benz Spring Summer 2011

Loved the Seventies preppy school girl mixed with the high school vintage shopper at Chris Benz. Sweet, sexy and simple. Great separates and flower prints with the slightest touch of sporty. Have no idea what his inspiration was but am sure art school chicks everywhere will be happy and hungry for it. Am beyond obsessed with the shoes!

Hexa by Kuho Spring Summer 2011

I think admittedly I am more entranced with missing Paris shows where I haven’t been for a few seasons and feeling for a minute that’s where I was transported to by the venue and crowd more than actually loving the Hexa by Kuho collection but I did think there were a few really great pieces. And I loved the artful shoes if only in theory as they looked impossible to walk in as did some of the full-length skirts and dresses. There were however a few deconstructed mini dresses I thought were really quite nice and I loved Kuho Jung’s tailoring and the thoughtfulness of it all.
