I got the most beautiful book in the mail yesterday. Terry O’Neill‘s latest photography book full of stunning images and stories to go alongside them. Since the 60s he has photographed some of the world’s most iconic names and faces (he was also married to Faye Dunaway in the 80s and took that amazing shot of her poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel after her win at the Oscars). The Helmut Newton show, “White Women, Sleepless Nights, Big Nudes,” (also the titles of his first three books) is opening June 29th and will be up through September 8th at The Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City. Needless to say, I have loved and been inspired by Helmut Newton for years. I read once somewhere that he used to get his shot in the first three frames.
During my last year working in Moscow as a fashion director my eyes started to gloss over a little after all of the fashion weeks and fashion shoots. It’s not that I was bored or ungrateful, I loved my job A LOT, but I got that old urge to explore some deeper issues and dig beneath the surface. As a result, in September of 2004 I started an art gallery with several Russian gallery owners and the painters Dubossarsky and Vinogradov at the first incarnation of the Red October Chocolate Factory galleries at the center of Moscow (this was a few years before Dasha Zhukova and Garage, that space is now completely different from when we began). A few weeks ago I watched the Girl Model documentary about the modeling industry, which explores methods of recruiting young models and how they work in foreign markets. It was a stark and much needed reminder of serious issues in our business. For the past several years Sara Ziff, who did her own documentary on the industry a few years ago and also founded the Model Alliance has been paving the way for underage models to have the same rights and protection as child actors. None of this should be surprising and the fact that it has taken our industry so long to acknowledge and deal with this is shocking, but today’s news is great regardless. It was during the French Open that Lacoste celebrated its 80th anniversary and everyone from Hermes to Veuve Clicquot created special pieces, some of which will be for sale. According to WWD, “While the gifts from Boucheron, Bernardaud, Christofle, S.T. Dupont and Fauchon will be reproduced for special orders in a limited edition of 80 pieces, the remaining items are to go straight to Lacoste’s vast archives.” So what are you saying?
