Saturday night we went to the opening of LA-based artist Gary Baseman’s latest exhibition, “Nightmares of Halloweens Past,” at KK Gallery in Chinatown. I loved the work, which is a collection of found Halloween photos, most shown in their original formats, with a few select images blown up and enhanced by Baseman’s own painting (see above). Sometimes it’s nice to give into the beauty of design and these tiny glass treasures filled with scents for the season are making me kvell. I love the bottle for Stella McCartney‘s newly launched L.I.L.Y. parfume and its promises of lilly-of-the-valley touched by truffle scent sounds divine. I know this week I have focused on a lot of media stuff but I can’t help it, it’s a natural obsession for me and I am so excited to read that one of our old friends from the Russian Vogue days, Karina Dobrotvorskaya, has been named president and editorial director of brand development for Conde Nast International! She is a total super star and this does not come as a surprise, especially since she has been president of Conde Nast Russia since 2008 and launched a slew of their hot titles. Speaking of my favorite albums of 2008 (see below) that was also the year I discovered LA-based duo John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard who perform as The Submarines. I had their 2nd album, Honeysuckle Weeks on repeat the whole year while going through that horrendous break up I like to reference when refelcting on the good, the bad and the ugly of romance. When I fell in love with Elgin James’ first feature “Little Birds” at Sundance in 2011 I had no idea about his background. There’s a beautiful profile on him in the September 3rd issue of The New Yorker (I read it only yesterday thanks to jury duty and a long standing, never ending addiction to magazine subscriptions that has my bedside stack growing at a rate impossible to keep up with…) He sounds like some of the guys I knew during high school in the midst of my punk days in Baltimore and DC, though the ones I knew were much less Continue reading
For their first season spring 2013 launch Harlyn‘s creative director Kei Kim and designer Maria Stanley did super cute and wearable dresses and separates in beautiful prints that for a Tucker fan like me hit the spot. The fact that they threw their shindig at Harvard & Stone (the Bella Union cocktail was hitting the spot too) with a much too brief acoustic set from Silverlake local Jenny Lewis makes it all the better. One of the three songs Jenny played was the hit “Silver Lining,” my favorite song from her old band Rilo Kiley (I was obsessed with their last album Under the Blacklight for all of 2008 and saw them that year at Coachella while working for WWD).
