On and On, The Band

On-and-On-Band

Last night I saw the Chicago-Minneapolis band On An On play at the Troubadour. They, along with Barbarossa (loved him as well!) opened for Swedish band Junip, whose self titled second album came out in April and who were also as amazing as you would expect. On and On is straight out of a John Hughes film if he was still alive and kicking making his Sixteen Candles Pretty in Pink soliloquies. I loved their breathless sound. They are on tour with Junip and will be in San Francisco and Portland this weekend. Not sure who took the photo of them above but it wasn’t me, so send if you know.

Stuff For The House

birds

Love these bird jars, which a friend of mine gave me as a gift a while ago. The color fits the theme of the day and I love the faux distressed vibe (just on shabby chic home stuff, not in real life!) More fun stuff below, including this awesome floral glass jar that is only $15! The bird jars are easy to find on One Kings Lane, they seem to always have them in stock and they are a great little gift for simple occasions. Also love this art deco vintage plate clock and French artisan stripe pillow. I saw these bookends from Wolfum in a friend’s showroom downtown last week and flipped over them. They are intended for kids’ rooms but I think they can go anywhere. Continue reading

Cucumber Mint Mojito (*sort of relevant and it sounds good)

ODL blousereiss dressclutchferragamo jacket

Love this hue of turquoise aka mint blue, which I’m still in the mood for, mint being the perfect shade of summer to wear, drink and eat (see below). Oscar de la Renta flounced sleeve blouse, Reiss embroidered dress, Vince Camuto clutch, and Salvatore Ferragamo linen blazer. Summer cocktail anyone?

New Summer Mint Salad

mint-sprig

Every time May rolls around I get excited about all the super fresh herbs and fruits (figs!) that come back into season. My favorite meal remains fresh figs, cheese, raspberries, almonds and wine (of course) and every year I do a new version of my summer salad, which this year is a simple combination of fresh spinach, tomatoes, fresh mint and basil. I chop equal parts of everything, add as much feta cheese as I am in the mood for and dress with rice vinegar, olive oil and a squirt of sriracha sauce. Eat immediately. Last weekend’s green apple potato salad recipe here as well.

Cinespia! Summer in LA Has Begun!

cinespia

When I started coming to LA years ago Cinespia was one of the highlights of things to do if I was lucky enough to be here in the summer months. It was started about ten years ago by John Wyatt, who just happens to be an ex-Bard film student. We were friends Freshman year at Bard but lost touch after and I had no idea he was the genius mastermind behind Cinespia until I ran into him at a party for a Cinefamily screening of the new film Maniac (*sidenote: our friend Megan Duffy plays one of Elijah Woods love interests in the film, photos from a shoot we did with her are coming soon!) This past Sunday we went to the cemetery for a screening of one of my favorite films, Amy Heckerling’s Clueless, and the rest of this summer’s schedule looks equally stellar. LA is nothing without these summer films, friends on the field, some wine, snacks and a good laugh. Thanks John! Continue reading

Tabitha Simmons Fall 2013

tabitha simmons fall 2013

Friday morning shoe porn from Tabitha Simmons for fall 2013. She is by far one of the best shoe designers in the world. I swoon, flip and die over pretty much every work of art she does. Beyond.

Andreis Costa, Daniel Gordon, New Art

Andreis_Costa_09

Full disclosure, I love Andreis Costa‘s work. I saw it a few years ago in his studio when we first met through mutual friends in LA and as it happens Andreis is also a Bard graduate (of course he is). So when I saw his solo show last night at BOA Gallery in West Hollywood (his first in LA, the gallery is directly behind the Rag & Bone store if you need an easy reference) I swooned. Andreis does gorgeous intricate collages that he literally cuts with a knife, hence the title of the show, “Cut With The Kitchen Knife”. Go see it, it’s up through June 6th. In a happy coincidence, Andreis’ old friend and Bard College roommate Daniel Gordon also has his first LA solo show of work up at M+B Gallery. Though they came a few years after I graduated, Andreis and Daniel were Freshman year roommates and lived in the same dorm I lived in my freshman year at Bard (Bleucher, we are all lucky we survived that wooden tent on stilts! Bard finally bulldozed “the ravines” a while ago). I love all the serendipity. And they both do beautiful work. Andreis above, Daniel below. Continue reading
