Muted by Rachel Goldberg

rachel on set

A few years ago I went to a screening at AFI in LA where I saw “Neighbors,” a fantastic short film by up and coming filmmaker Rachel Goldberg. Since then Rachel and I have become good friends and I even did costume design on her next short, “Rosita Lopez For President,” which also did the film festival circuit. Her most recent gem, “Muted,” starring Chandra Wilson and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, just won the HBO Short Film Competition at the American Black Film Festival here in New York. The emotionally tense and quietly powerful short approaches a subject most of us never think about: how the media treats minority missing children. It is beautifully done and leaves you shocked and enraged, which is a good thing. Rachel working her magic on set above and more stills below. Continue reading

La Roux, Trouble in Paradise

la Roux

La Roux has a new album coming out, Trouble in Paradise, on July 22nd. A few magical tracks to listen to here. Her self titled debut from 2009 was on repeat in my CD player for most of that year. Major girl crush.

Football, Futball

Andreis Gursky-Fortuna

If you indulged in summer Tuesdays like I did and watched way too many games during the World Cup competition happening in Brazil the last two weeks you know the highlights. Aside from the head butts, bloody noses, biting (what?!?), an unfortunate lower back injury during the last Brazil game, that heartbreaking last minute 30 second goal, and uh, big balls flying all over the place, the slow motion playbacks were just one of the many mesmerizing moments of the game. It got me thinking that the guys and girls working those boards must have gone to film school because the playbacks became a John Woo’esque ballet of sports. Fantastic to watch. Above, Andreis Gursky’s “Fortuna” photo, which is included in LACMA’s Futball: The Beautiful Game exhibition closing July 20th, a week after the last game of the 2014 World Cup is played. Officially rooting for Brazil now.

Blackbird Blackbird, Tangerine Sky

San Francscio based Blackbird Blackbird is playing Mercury Lounge tonight. Love this gently upbeat track from the new album Tangerine Sky, which was released in June. Tickets are only $12. Something fun to do in the middle of the hurricane.

The Smell of Summer

Have you ever noticed how smell can take you back to a certain time and place more so than anything else? I love how parfumes define a season or period of my life. Above, Terry De Gunzburg Bleu Paradis eau de parfum, Penhaligon’s Artemisia Eau de Parfum, Creed Acqua Fiorentina (one of my current favorites, I’ve been wearing it for months), and Hermes Un Jardin en Mediterranee (the whole Un Jardin line from Hermes is intoxicating, I’ve been wearing Un Jardin sur le Nil for years).

Feel Free to Call Me The F Word

Photo_05

I wrote this essay a year ago though I can’t imagine why it felt scary. I definitely wasn’t scared of “the F word” when I was in high school in the 80’s though I also hadn’t experienced a certain backlash as a woman at that point. It’s an endless debate, especially recently when the word “feminism” pops up everywhere from cool starlet profiles to shopping websites and pop star revelations, all with a politely implied undertone to the conversations. This year there has actually been a lot of discussion in the cultural feed about the more pressing women’s issues of education for girls, rape, domestic violence and every day harassment and abuse. None of which seems to have done any good given the horrific health care ruling, which came down yesterday. The pop culture debate seems to make the real problems a little more approachable. For who and why? That’s a whole other debate.

Winona Ryder for Rag & Bone

Winona rag-and-bone

I have been praying for a Winona come back. Good on the Rag & Bone boys for satisfying it just a little by putting her in their fall ad campaign (shot by Glen Luchford). Come on Hollywood, it’s time.

The Couture Dominatrix

Let’s call this the couture dominatrix look (*or the Peter Lindbergh circa 1989 super model look I will never tire of). Sometimes I get so bored with how safe everyone is with fashion I just want to wear a gown to Key Foods. I beat this subject to a pulp as a stylist in LA, where at some events the most you could hope for on the red carpet was a prom dress that didn’t come off the rack, which is sad considering how much gorgeous fashion is out there. I love this tulle gown from Alberta Ferretti, a suede hat from Maison Michel, boots from Moschino and a Givenchy shark tooth nail necklace. More gowns to wear to a gala, a party, a photo shoot on the beach or the grocery store below. Continue reading
