Levi’s, Will.i.am & EKOCYCLE

I don’t need to wax poetic about how much I love when brands actually do what they say and mean what they say, so needless to say, I love Levi’s. Levi’s Haus in LA hosted a little soiree last night to celebrate their collaboration on a limited edition 501® jean, made of eight post-consumer waste plastic bottles, for EKOCYCLE™, a social movement founded by Will.i.am and Coca Cola. The jeans are a part of the Levi’s® WasteLessTM collection they introduced last fall to educate consumers about recycling, which is also the ethos behind EKOCYCLE™ “a global initiative designed to educate consumers about everyday recycling choices and change the way consumers think about and treat waste.” Pics from the night below. Punk at The Met, yes, yes, Punk is Dead, blah blah blah

bogeys

There is the usual brewhaha over the new exhibit “Punk: Chaos to Couture” at The Met which opens next week on May 9th in NY so I thought it only fair that some of us who sacrificed healthy hair and various pierced body parts to the art of angry punk rock pipe in. When I was in 8th grade I discovered skateboarding and punk music. In that order. My first punk music cassette in 1986 from a fellow skater in my class (*I was the only girl amidst the boys who skated in middle school) included GBH, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Misfits, Clash and Sex Pistols for good measure. By the end of 8th grade I had also discovered Manic Panic hair dye and when 9th grade started I had my first mowhawk. A blue one to be specific. That year I ordered my first pair of skull buckle boots from Bogey’s of London (see above and below, they no longer Continue reading

Travel in Style, Pack Light

travel equipment toptravel_banana_republic sandaltravel mkoes bagShorts_Rebecca

Traveling light is my favorite way to go. I hate checking luggage and usually only travel with two bags, my carry on and a large purse where I can squeeze a few extra things (belt, beauty products, maybe even my laptop or iPad and magazines, of course). In the carry on, I take as little as possible and as much as I can that can be recycled throughout my trip. Shorts are a great way to minimize if you’re going somewhere warm. I love this Equipment shirt with Rebecca taylor shorts and Banana Republic sandals. Change into an orange silk blouse and Sergio Rossi heels at night. I like to switch out my wallet for a cute clutch when I travel so the shift from day to night is even easier. A bag that can fit a ton of stuff like this Michael Kors one is perfect, ditto the Alexander McQueen studded clutch which can be your wallet by day and evening bag at night. Continue reading

Girl Model, A New Documentary on The World of Modeling

polina page 1

This is a photo from Polina Kouklina‘s first shoot for a fashion publication (Russian ELLE to be exact). I photographed her in Moscow for it in 2001 and she went on to become a working model in Paris, Milan and New York just a couple of years after this shoot. I repeatedly told her Russian “mother agency” (an ironic term if ever there was one…) that I didn’t want to shoot girls under the age of 16 and when I saw her at a casting they told me she was 16. On set she told me she was 14 and by the middle of the shoot I found out she was actually 13. Her real mother, Continue reading

Great Walls

Rich_kids_wall

Sometimes when I am sitting in my car at a red light in LA and bored, I look left and find amazing walls staring back at me. It happens a lot. Not just in LA. Love this. No explanation necessary…

Paris Photo LA

Katy-Grannan-Untitled-Bakersfield-CA-2011

We checked out the Paris Photo show last night at their opening night event (*with champagne thanks to Armani who sponsored the Aqua 3 exhibit by Jim Goldberg). I’m going back to geek out on the work and listen to some of the artists speak on Saturday, when the show is open to the public from 12noon to 7pm all weekend. There’s some great work in the corners we managed to see amidst the eclectic crowd. Gregory Crewdson (who is speaking at 2pm on Saturday), Larry Fink, Diane Arbus, Katy Grannan (Katy and I used to be signed to the same photo agent, Bill Charles, my Continue reading

The Great Gatsby

Matthew-Williamson-Beaded-Fringe-embellished-metallic-leather-clutch-NET-A-PORTER

I am just as excited about Gatsby, which opens May 10th, as is the rest of the world (*or at least our part of the world…) The preview alone (watch below) is a brilliant short film all on its own so I can imagine how good Baz Luhrmann‘s real thing is. If you’re a music fan the soundtrack is going to be insane. They’ve started releasing some of the tracks onto the world this week, including Sia‘s “Kill and Run” as well as The XX track “Together” and Lana Del Ray‘s “Young & Beautiful” (listen to all three below). And let’s not forget all the fashion inspiration that will come of this, plus a Fitzgerald revival (as if he really needs one… who doesn’t love the romantically tragic melancholy of a rich Continue reading
